Medical examiners have the grisly task of investigating these deaths under the control of law enforcement agencies. They are trained in pathology to determine the cause and find out how these things occurred. By examining the bodies, medical examiners can determine what caused the death, how it happened, and the possible time of death.

Medical examiners have tasks, however, that do more than examining dead bodies. These include

• preparing comprehensive reports on postmortem autopsies and inspections performed on cadavers;
• performing and supervising autopsies performed by staff or assistants;
• conducts toxicology studies of organs and fluids by using medical, technical, and scientific procedures so as to determine cause of death and the manner as to how the person died;
• preservation of physical and medical evidence that will be useful when a possible suspect will be apprehended;
• visiting scenes of crime and gathering all forensic evidence in the crime scene that may prove useful in the solution of cases;
