Academic Background

It wasn’t always this way but now, people who wish to be human resource practitioner have to go through years of schooling and training. The educational attainments required of an HR director includes the following:

  • They must be graduate of a four-year degree or an equivalent. The required degrees are either a degree in Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management or a Bachelor of Science (or Arts) in Psychology.
  • After the completion of their bachelor’s degree, they could be hired as non-managerial HR positions such as a human resource staff or an HR assistant.
  • For aspiring human resource directors, it is required that they pursue higher education. They must be holders of a master’s degree in Business Administration, Industrial or Organizational Psychology, or Law.

Skills and Abilities

There are four facets of human resources: compensation and benefits, training and development, employee relations, and recruitment. To be a human resource director, it is important the one be proficient at all aspects of HR. Aside from that, there are more skills and abilities they must possess such as mentioned below:

  • They should be knowledgeable in the labor laws of the country where they are practicing.

  • They must value discretion. A lot of sensitive information that come in and out of the HR director’s office. An HR officer must respect confidentiality and learn to keep their mouths shut when they need to.

  • They must be skilled in handling conflict. They act as a mediator, lawyer, judge, and therapist in the office. They must have the emotional endurance to handle conflicts and be unbiased in doing so.
