A petition Template is a formal request from a person to a governing official to ask for favor and/or privileges. The word is now colloquially used as a written appeal that is often signed by many people so their request is granted. However, not all petitions involve that many people.

For those who have difficulty drafting a one, they usually refer to Petition Templates for an additional guide on this matter. One or two individuals could make a petition, as in the case of a divorce petition.

How to Write a Petition

You may care seriously about a certain issue and feel that something must be done to change your current situation. The problems is you don’t exactly know how a petition is done. Just follow these useful tips and steps when making a petition:

  • Have a goal in mind. Writing the petition guide would be easy if you have a clear goal of what you want to achieve. For an academic petitionfor instance, you may want to apply for a course overload petition. When doing so, carefully consider what your purpose is.
  • Write paragraphs that support your goal statement. You can now write how you feel about the issue, why it is important to you and to them as well.

The Petition Format

You may be thinking of making a business petition but don’t know what goes into them. As a petition is a legal document, there are things that need to be present in a petition for it to be considered in court. A petition, just like any other formal document, must follow a certain petition format. Below are the details that must be seen in a petition:

  • Caption. Write here the name of the people involved (e.g., plaintiff and defendant), case number, and the courthouse name.
  • Petition title. An example is “Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus.”
  • Body. It helps if you number each paragraph in the body.
  • Signature Block. The petitioner should sign the document.

How Many Signatures Are Needed for an Effective Petition?

If you are advocating for a special cause and you care deeply about it, you might feel helpless when you are the only one person fighting for it. However, if you never let your advocacy known, you’ll never know how many people feel the same way you do. One way of getting the word out is by making a petition. Follow the steps outlined in the previous section on how to make a petition. You’ll never know the importance of petition documents until you make one.

There are many ways of making a petition. You can do it the old-fashioned way of writing one on paper and going door to door to get your signatures or you can do an online petition. The number of needed signatures to make an effective petition depends on the severity of the issue you are dealing with. For school-level petitions, 100 parent signatures would suffice. For higher government petitions, however, you would need a lot of signatures for you to get noticed, if you would get noticed at all. The UK House of Commons however has a more structured way of dealing with petitions: 10,000 signatures would give you a response while 100,000 signatures will start a debate in the parliament.

How to Write a Petition Letter

A petition letter that requests buy-in from other people often contains two parts — the content and the list of signatures. This format is followed in any petition that asks for signatures from different individuals, such as an employee petition, school petition, etc. To make the letter, you would need to follow the formal letter format. This means you need to make the heading, the body, and the closing salutations of the letter. Like any formal letter, you as the petitioner should also sign the document. If you are asking for signatures for the petition, make sure that you attach a table so people could write their name and affix their signature.

How to Start a Petition for a Change of Law

A change of law is quite a big undertaking for any government. That is why it takes quite sometime to make them and to, in a way, un-make them. If you feel that a law or some provisions in the law need to be changed, you can start a petition. You could start with a community petition and then go bigger as needed. First, you have to be passionate about the issue. Do a research on how your local government works. You can then start to write your petition. However, know that changing the law is a big issue and it would take a lot of signatures and significant buy-in for you to get noticed.

How to Write a Petition

Writing a petition should be easy when you sincerely care about the issue. When you do, words just come naturally and you would get to writing what you really want your reader to take from the document. It also takes a lot of research for you to make valid points for your petition. When writing a petition for the first time, you can refer to a petition guide. They are very useful in helping you draft that petition that gets noticed. If making your own is still a problem, some sample petition templates would come in handy.

Guidelines in Writing a Petition

Time and effort must be spent in making a petition no matter what type it is, be it an execution petition, leave petitionor any other kind. It is a legal document and important decisions are made based on them. Petitions, when done right, can be a strong catalyst for change. Here are a few guidelines you can follow research to write an effective petition:

  • Craft a compelling headline. The headline offers a glimpse of the content of the whole document, so make sure your headline effectively captures what the petition is about.
  • Provide an objective. You need to have a goal when writing a petition. When writing gets hard, always go back to the objectives that you have set in place.
  • Be concise. People don’t have a lot of time to read through the whole petition so make sure that you go directly to the point.
  • Be visual. When making a petition that asks for individual signatures, it would greatly help if you have photos to bring the issue to life. Having visual aid adds compelling support to your cause.
