One of the jobs related to health care is the medical office assistant. A medical office assistant is a person who performs administrative and some medical duties under the supervision of a medical practitioner. These are persons who ask for a patient’s medical history and their blood pressure, sometimes perform injections, still under the supervision and direction of a doctor.

Qualifications of a Medical Office Assistant

  • You must have a diploma or a certificate in medical assistance. You can get a program from a university, community colleges, and vocational institutions.
  • You must have acquired knowledge both from classroom instruction, from discussions and lectures, and you also have a practical training like laboratory classes and procedures.
  • You must be learned with matters such as laboratory procedures, medical law and ethics, clinical assistance, how to properly deal with patients, anatomy and physiology, medical jargon, accounting and insurance, and some principles in pharmaceutical.

I am sure that you have an experience going to the doctor before. The person that you have to see first when you go to your appointment is actually the assistant. Before the doctor faces his/her patient, it is the medical office assistant that deals with the patients first. He/she will ask about your appointment. Sometimes he/she will get your weight and height too. And most of the times, he/she will try to entertain you. You may not notice it very much, but these helpers try to appease a patient’s struggles by diverting their attention from the pain or discomfort they must have been feeling—that right there is therapy too!

Qualities of a Good Medical Office Assistant

  • You should have outstanding people skills. Imagine, you have to talk and interact to a lot of people for a lot of times. You should know how to communicate properly with them. You should be friendly, approachable, and respectful. After all, the patients are already experiencing something that takes them out of their comfort zones; the least you can do for them is make them relax so that they can deal with what their physicians can say and do to them.
  • You should be organized. A doctor’s office is filled with a lot of patients and they have varied medical conditions. You must know how to file things properly unless you risk mistakes in prescription and records.
  • You should be patient. Aside from the fact that there might be times that the clinic will be packed with people, you also have to know how to handle them properly. Be patient with them.
