An attorney is a busy person. Their noses are always stuck in a case folder, their eyes glued on the computer screen, or they’re always flitting from place to place, taking care of whatever their clients need. A lawyer has so many responsibilities and has a lot of different matters that demand their attention that they’d probably need more hours than a day has to offer to do their jobs. For this reason, there exist legal assistants to lift some of the burden off a lawyer’s shoulders.

Writing a Cover Letter

A cover letter is essential as it is what would let your potential employers determine if your resume is worth paying attention to. As an aspiring legal assistant, this is even more essential as part of your job is to know how to compose formal letters and have strong written communication skills. An impressive cover letter is already a big chunk of the battle, especially if you are applying for a job in a prestigious firm or as an assistant to a highly reputable lawyer.

While it would depend on your creativity on what your letter’s format would be, at least be sure to do the following:

  • Introduce yourself. Tell them your name, from what school you graduated and with what degree, and tell them how you found out about the job. However, remember not to simply copy and paste from your resume. Lawyers are readers and would probably toss what they find boring or poorly written.
  • Show your skills of persuasion by arguing why you’re perfect for the job. Remember, your job is similar to that of a lawyer. Impress a potential employer by providing strong arguments that prove your qualifications for the job. Mention relevant skills and experiences that you may have.
  • Take advantage of the cover letter by using it to explain and strengthen your attached resume. Also, this would be particularly useful to showcase your written communication skills, attention to detail, and being organized (through how you arrange your thoughts).

It might even be particularly impressive if you were to write your cover letter by incorporating some techniques in writing legal letters. Check out these Legal Letter Format Samples to guide you.
