When working independently, a contractor must be able to manage all site-based activities, ensuring that all contracts must be finished on time. He must also make sure that the work is within budgetary limits while maintaining client satisfaction. He also needs to do short-term planning when some specifications are not being met and need to be changed on short notice.

Most contractors hire subcontractors to do a couple of aspects on the job. He may even need to outsource the workforce. With this aspect, it’s very important to collate the work done and make careful supervision on the different aspects of the work being done, otherwise miscommunication will result in the work not being made according to specifications.

Budgetary considerations also need to be included due to the fact that some clients are not willing to put in more money than what is being estimated or specified in the contract. This will give rise to a couple of problems like material procurement when it’s found out these are actually more expensive than what is being specified.

Aside from planning, procurement, and finance, it’s very important for contractors to maintain good client relations. Oftentimes, it’s the contractor’s job to represent the company at site meetings. Clients often have queries that need to be answered, and it is the contractor’s responsibility to answer these and satisfy clients with their explanations.

In most cases, projects are not finished on time due to delays and other unavoidable circumstances. In this regard, a contractor must maintain a flow of timely information on the progress and the cost so that clients will understand why the delay happened and what must be done to complete the project. For this reason, the contractor must go ahead and inform the client without the client being able to find out for himself about the delay. It’s part of maintaining good client relations and etiquette relevant to this profession. When a client is informed beforehand, he is often more amenable to the changes than when he is informed late.

Finally, a contractor must always put safety above and beyond any aspect of the work that’s being done. Onsite safety is very important to minimize injuries at work. When an accident happens, it’s always the responsibility of the contractor to take care of the injured worker, and with it comes the loss of potential profitability of the contract. Safety regulations should always be put in place to ensure an efficient working environment.
