Fund-raising

Fund-raising is the process of gathering voluntary contributions from individuals, companies, charitable institutions, or government agencies. The contributions could either be

  • in the form of financial aid (money),
  • in the form of other resources (materials, T-shirts, etc.), or
  • in the form of permission to use specific establishments or machinery with the purpose of furthering fund-raising goals or objectives.

Fundraising can be done in various ways. Two of the most common ways of doing it are

  • by simply sending a request for donation from prospective donors and
  • by organizing events that invites guests to participate in it with the intent of garnering donations from the event’s attendees.

Importance of Thanking Your Donors

Whatever the method of fund-raising used, it is vital that the donation requester sends a letter expressing his or her gratitude toward your donor. The reason for such necessity are the following:

1. A thank-you letter will inform your donors the specific actions that you have taken in furthering your cause because of the donation. This way, your donors will be able to see the fruits of their kindness.

2. A thank-you letter will build the bridge for future donations. Your genuine display of gratitude will solidify the bond between donor and donee and thus, this open the possibility of the donor’s receptivity of future fund-raising requests.

Tips in Writing a Thank-You Letter

1. Start with a formal and friendly introduction.

In this part, mention the name of your organization or institution, then state clearly that you are thankful of their donations or of their willingness to contribute.

2. Use a story to show them results.

Donations are usually made with the consideration of achieving certain objectives or goals. That is why, make sure that you assure your donors of how you have allocated their donations. For example, you could mention a specific person’s name whose living conditions had been improved due to the donations.

3. Paint a picture for your sponsors of the possible positive ripple effect of their donations.

Not only is it important that their donations are slowly taking effect but that they are assured that it will continually benefit a person, your organization, or better yet, society as a whole.

4. Encourage them to engage more (if necessary).

If necessary only, you may state that your organization is wide open for future contributions. Also, don’t forget to include your contact details in this part.

5. End with a formal closing.
