Patient Care Technician vs. Medical Assistant

A medical assistant is a jack-of-all-trades personnel in a medical office or any medical institution. Whereas a medical assistant may be tasked to

  • man the front desk;
  • entertain new patients;
  • ask walk-in patients to fill out form;
  • interview patients in order to point them to the appropriate department or physician;
  • enter patient data in a computer system;
  • examine the veracity of insurance claims and resolve insurance claim disputes;
  • answer inquiries;
  • answer the front desk phone;
  • schedules patients’ appointments;
  • provide the patients a document of their medical bill;
  • records patients’ vital statistics when necessary; and
  • keep an organized and updated record of patients’ information, background, and medical history.

A patient care technician, however, is more related to the medical side of the medical business operations. It is rare that he/she will be tasked to perform the clerical tasks of a medical assistant. As a matter of fact, a patient care technician is more concerned with the care of patients, taking note of their vital signs, clean and prepare medical equipment, and assist physicians during procedures (e.g. bandaging patients, preparing physician’s basic tools, etc.).
