If you are passionate about working for a certain company but you are not quite sure whether they are hiring, you should consider writing a letter of intent.
Your letter of intent is essentially a cover letter. See these Sample Letters for reference. However, you are not targeting it to a particular job opening but to the company as a whole. You are expressing that you want to work for them and you are inquiring about the possibilities.
Some companies are not as aggressive as most are when it comes to job advertisements. So if you feel like the company you wish to work for belongs to this minority, then you should definitely send them a letter of intent.

Letters of Intent versus Cover Letters
There is, however, one distinguishable element. Comparably, both letters could serve as the introduction to your application. Also, either one could sum up the contents of your resume, and would align the gist of your skills and qualifications to make you the best candidate for employment. Cover letters, though, do it for a certain position, but in letters of intent, you are not even certain whether a position is in fact available.
Letters of Intent
Your letter of intent inquires about possible job openings that would suit and do well with all your skills and qualifications. Although you are uncertain about the job availability, you are nonetheless knowledgeable about the company you are applying to and you are very interested to work for them.
Formatting Letters of Intent
As with cover letters, letters of intent should be kept concise in just a single page. Moreover, it should follow the standard business letter format:
- in Times New Roman, or any other professional font face;
- sized 12;
- in black text;
- printed on a letter or A4 sized bond paper; and
- with 1-inch margins on all sides.
Also, all the components must be aligned to the left save for the body of the letter, which must be justified, and you should use block paragraphs instead of indents. Block paragraphs are done at the end of every paragraph when you tap “Enter” on your keyboard twice.

- Ask about the company’s preferred means of correspondence, whether through e-mail or post.
