Field engineers may be required by their companies to report to a jobsite field office whose location may vary from region to region. In some cases when a field engineer works for a large construction company where projects are being conducted overseas, he may be required to travel. In this case, field engineers should always be ready every time to be assigned anywhere the company requires, and he’s expected to stay until after the job is completed. It’s not unusual for some field engineers to be away from home for a couple of years at a time. For this reason, many companies hire fresh graduates who are single and would be trained on the job and learn along as the project progresses, often with the guidance of senior engineers tasked to oversee the whole project.

Some of the tasks of a field officer assigned to a particular project includes:

  • Engaging in construction planning, location layout, schedule management, material procurement, and jobsite safety inspections. He should also be knowledgeable in horizontal and vertical surveying with the aid of instruments such as a GPS.
  • Must be proficient in organized documentation of survey notes and  able to do geometrical designs and mathematical calculations
  • Coordinate and monitor the work of construction crews to ensure everything is built according to specifications and contract requirements
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in any weather conditions, climb and work at various heights, and lift materials when necessary

Those are just some of the job tasks required of a field engineer. While there’s no particular engineering course that focuses on field engineering, it is common knowledge to those who are adept at most construction projects that field engineers must be graduates of either civil engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, and even industrial engineering. The latter requirement is for a particular field in incorporating the workforce and technology in a distinct project.

Field engineers may be assigned to one particular project until its completion, at which point he will be reassigned to another area on a different project. In rare cases, companies hire competent individuals without an engineering degree to perform the duties of a field engineer, although construction experience is always required.
