Ink on paper, feelings into words, and your heart poured into pages meant for that one. There is a romance in handwritten love letters unlike any other. There is a feeling of sincerity and intimacy of knowing that the words scribbled on that piece of paper are meant for just you. Being able to hold the paper in your hands and clutch it as you fall asleep at night, tracing the creases where you’ve folded and unfolded it time and again, poring over the words you’ve already stashed deep in your heart and feeling the lightness of knowing that you are loved—this has become a privilege not many enjoy. Writing love letters has become a dying art form, but it deserves a great comeback.

Let your loved ones feel the butterflies in their stomach upon reading the letter you wrote for them. See these Sample Love Letters for inspiration and read on for the whats, whys, and hows of love letter writing.

What Are Love Letters?

Love letters are the expression of your feelings and emotions in written form. The contents of a love letter could vary greatly. While some are written with the intention to express devotion, gratitude, appreciation, or love, there are some that are written to express anger, hurt, disappointment, fear, or to say goodbye.

Because love letters are letters meant to show love, they are not necessarily exclusively exchanged between lovers. Love, after all, is a universal emotion felt in a variety of different ways. Although mainstream media portray love letters as romantic, love letters could also be sent to other loved ones to show show them that you care. Love letters are commonly sent to

  • boyfriend or girlfriend;

  • husband or wife;

  • sons and daughters;

  • father and mother;

  • brother and sister;

  • grandfather, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins;

  • former romantic partners;

  • potential romantic partners;

  • teachers and mentors; and

  • friends.

Society has implanted a romantic implication in love letters, which is why it might sound odd to write such to people you are not romantically involved with. However you might prefer to call it, don’t hesitate to plop down, grab a pen, and write to your loved ones about how glad you are to have them be a part of your life. In fact, history has showed that the most heartwarming and swoonworthy love letters were exchanged by those who were not in any way romantically involved.

Why Do You Write Love Letters?

It is quite a head scratcher how an emoji with heart eyes accompanied by a cat with the same eyes could send shivers down one’s spine. In today’s day and age, technology has taken over the world, including romance. When a simple text would do, why should you bother with handwriting a love letter to express your feelings when there are faster and easier ways to do so?

  • A Handwritten Letter Is Intimate

    In a world where everything is done through the computers, seeing someone’s handwriting could be rather intimate. You don’t have to be a master of calligraphy for your loved one to appreciate the strokes of your pen. Sometimes, just the way you would dot your small i’s and j’s might be enough for a smile to creep upon their lips.

  • A Love Letter Is Not Instant

    In a fast-paced life, a little steadiness is appreciated from time to time. It’s not that writing a love letter and sending it through an instant messaging app is in no way romantic. Sometimes, it is, and it is always appreciated. However, writing and sending a love letter takes away the anxiety of the much dreaded Seen notification. Additionally, writing a love letter takes time and dedication. It is, in fact, a very tangible show of effort.

  • A Love Letter Does Not Demand

    A love letter is not demanding of a reply. Unlike with an instant message where the recipient might feel pressured to think of a response, a love letter allows for time to pore over the words, and to think of a heartfelt and sincere response. Also, in a love letter, you can be confident that when you open that envelope, you’re not going to see “Okay. Thank you” as a reply.

  • A Love Letter Cannot Be Deleted

    One of the biggest advantages of a handwritten love letter is that it is not simply stowed away in your inbox along with junkmail. A love letter can be held in your hands. For long-distance couples, a love letter is the closest thing to a physical connection as the paper one held is now in the hands of the other. You can inhale the scent of the paper, study each stroke of ink, and hold it close and imagine that it is your loved one in your arms.

  • There Is No Autocorrect in a Love Letter

    The beauty in love letters is that it is, ultimately, for you. The letters it contains are woven together to form words dedicated to you. Each sentence, each phrase, each paragraph are all a tribute to you and no one else. There is no autocorrect or “right click, synonym, replace” in a love letter, just the exact thoughts of the writer, words that remind them of you.

  • Love Letters Are Rare

    Receiving a handwritten love letter has become a privilege enjoyed by a few handful. Perhaps what adds a bit of romance in love letters is knowing that it is not obligatory, yet someone took some time off their busy day to compose a letter that would bare their souls to you.

When Do You Write a Love Letter

Love letters can be about anything and sent anytime. Commonly, love letters are written to:

  • Celebrate

    When your loved one reached an important milestone in their lives, write them a letter telling them how proud you are of them and how much they’ve inspired you. Tell your loved one how glad you are to have seen them reach for their dreams and how honored you feel to be by their side as they achieve the greatness meant for them.

  • Appreciate

    Sometimes, we fail to acknowledge the little things that make life beautiful. Similarly, we have gotten so used to having someone by our sides that we might unpurposely take them for granted sometimes. Take the time to sit down and write to your loved one and tell them about how happy you are that they are a part of your life and remind them of how amazing they are in your eyes.

  • Apologize

    It is not easy to put your pride down and apologize, but when it is necessary, do it. A relationship is so much more important than winning an argument. Let your ego down and write to your loved one about how important they are to you and apologize for what you did wrong. Sometimes, a simple sorry could go a long way.

  • Comfort

    Be there for your loved ones as they face a turbulent time in their lives. Write them a letter of comfort reminding them that they are not alone because you are there, holding their hand, and willing to share with them the air they need to be able to breathe easy.

No matter why you’re writing, a love letter is definitely a great way to express what is in your heart. See the Sample Love Letters we have available in the site to help you and guide you.

Writing a Love Letter

There is no specific format when writing a love letter. A love letter is simply a letter to express your love and you can write it any way you want. Just keep these tips in mind to ensure that you are writing a love letter that could touch the heart:

  • Be sincere

There is nothing wrong with borrowing words from someone else when writing a love letter. What is important is that you truly mean the contents of the letter and that you are writing it because you want to express your love for the person.

  • Be vulnerable

The purpose of the letter is to express your emotions to your loved one. Open up and pour yourself in the letter. Let them in. A generic, superficial letter is no better than no letter.

  • Share memories or intimate details

Include inside jokes, pet names, or memories between you two. This creates a personal touch to the letter. Also, nostalgia is a powerful ally when trying to appeal to emotion.

  • Include a sign-off and the date you completed the letter

This is not a business letter you can finish off with a “Sincerely.” Sign the letter off with a more intimate closing and end it with a sentimental finish. Also, a love letter is a keepsake. Make sure to include the date of when you wrote it (or completed it).

Love letters need not be written by a great poet or a writer. The effort you put into it should be enough for your loved one. However, if you find yourself needing assistance, see and download our Sample Love Letters in the website.
