Medical assistants are health care staff that work to support doctors and other specialists. They may be found in

  • hospitals,
  • private clinics, and
  • other health care facilities.

They do a lot around these places, and their duties may be categorized under the two broad headings of administrative and clinical roles.

The Administrative Roles of Medical Assistants

These are the desk jobs required of medical assistants:

  • handling telephone calls, and e-mails;
  • filing and organizing medical and patient forms;
  • keeping a record of appointments;
  • ushering guests into the facility, for checkups, laboratory exams, or admissions;
  • corresponding with insurance companies, and the like;
  • issuing bills; and
  • maintaining hospital or clinic databases, among many others.

The Clinical Roles of Medical Assistants

The more directly medical work of medical assistants are

  • blood drawing,
  • asking for patient’s medical histories,
  • assisting doctors during lab exams or procedures,
  • seeing to dressings and sutures,
  • giving medication upon the instructions of doctors, and many more.

Educational Programs for Medical Assistants

Programs that teach on this position and the work that it entails are offered by vocational, community, or technical colleges. These last from a year to two, at most.

No certification to practice is required of medical assistants.
