The statement of purpose is a formal document that lets the applicant introduce themselves to the admission committee, and is usually considered to be the most vital part of the application formalities. It covers information such as who you are, what’s your academic background, professional interests, and how you will add value to the program or field that you plan to be a part of. Overall, it tells the admission committee who you are and why should they care about you. And no, it’s not a biography that contains every single aspect of your life. Only include what you think is necessary, and it doesn’t have to be everything. Relevant information such as educational background, academic achievements, personal interests that might have influenced you choice in the field, and what motivates you right now that keeps you moving forward. It’s one of the most asked requirements by universities and organizations worldwide and is definitely considered to be really important. It presents a more polished view of the applicant to the committee, so making sure that the document is done right and well is definitely cause for concern.

How to Write a Legal Statement of Purpose

Because it’s such a very important piece, you have to make sure that you are writing it in the best way possible. It should be good enough to sway the decision of the committee to your favor over the other applicants. Writing it can feel daunting, but chopping the writing process down into four  more manageable sections can make it a whole lot easier.

  1. Sort your ideas
Try and reframe the task and get excited for the opportunity to write it. The process becomes a lot more easier if you see it in a much lighter perspective, see it as an opportunity to express yourself. You never really get to interact with the panel so this is your chance to directly speak to them. Be interesting, put some flavor into it. Write a good story with a compelling opening line to immediately get the attention of your readers right off the bat. Successfully getting the committee interested, and I mean really interested, on your paper would mean that you’re already off to a really good start.
  2. Develop an outline
Consistence and coherence is key in a statement of purpose. Pay attention to the presentation of your information, making sure it is compelling, unique, interesting, comprehensive, all that good stuff. To successfully achieve this, it is best to divide your SOP into three main sections, Introduction, Main Body, and Conclusion. The introduction contains a brief biography of yourself and talk about your motivations and inspirations that lead you to this path. The body is your main selling point in your SOP. It should contain your achievements, your accomplishments, and your background pertaining to the field. And then the conclusion that reiterates and summarizes the highlights of your information and should re-emphasize your qualifications and compatibility with the field. A well thought out outline gives you a proper roadmap to follow to make sure that your SOP is properly and well organized.
  3. First draft
After getting the more important preparation out of the way, it’s time to finally draft your SOP. Writing it in several drafts before submitting ensures that everything is properly polished and perfect as it should be. Present it in your own unique way, that differentiates you from all the other applicants. Tell your own story in your own words, let your personality shine through and show the committee even just a sliver of who you are.
  4. Reread
After writing your first draft, get it read by as many people as possible. Family, friends, neighbors, the shop owner down the street, anyone. Doing this will help you identify mistakes and look for ways on how to improve your paper overall. Making sure that there are no grammatical or typographical errors. Get rid of any clutter and making sure that everything is well and done.
