A rehearsal is defined as a practice in preparation for a performance to be presented in an event or during a particular occasion. Rehearsals are common in the entertainment industry to help performing artists practice and get familiar with the actual venue where they will be performing. In the same sense, wedding rehearsals are also done so that members of the wedding entourage will know what to do and where to go during the wedding ceremony.

It is important that rehearsals be scheduled on times when participants of the said event are available. It is also often scheduled a couple of days before the actual performance or event date. In order for rehearsals to be scheduled accordingly, a rehearsal schedule is created so that all performances presented on the event day can be tracked and practiced before the day of the event.

What Are the Two Types of Rehearsals?

Practicing our mind and our body to remember the things that we need to do on a particular event, especially in a performance, is one of the goals of having a rehearsal. There are currently two types of memory rehearsals and they are maintenance rehearsals and collaborative rehearsals. Let’s try to differentiate one from the other.

Memory rehearsals involve long-term and short-term memory. Maintenance rehearsals store the memories we have about something in our short-term memories. Doing things repeatedly is something that we do to save information in our long-term memories, especially with the absence of something to write on. Take for example a phone call you have received asking you to relay a message to your boss or someone. In order for you to remember the message, the person who called and the person to relay the message to, you repeat that set of information in your mind or you say it to yourself. This information will then be stored in your short-term memory and will disappear right after you have relayed the messaged.

Elaborate rehearsals, on the other hand, work with our long-term memories to help us remember the concepts we have stored in our short-terms memories and later on have them stored in our long-term memories. A notable example is the use of image representations or mnemonics. If you have tried studying using those examples before, then you are sure to have moved information stored on your short-term memory into your long-term memory. For example, to remember the sequence of the colors of the rainbow, you use the following mnemonics: “Riding On Your Granny’s Bike Is Vail.”

The letters in bold stand for the first letters of the colors of the rainbow in visible order, which is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This way you will easily remember the sequence and the colors which will then be stored in your long-term memory.  Other topics related to schedules that you might be interested in are activity schedule samples and templates, printable daily schedule templates, and study schedule samples and templates.

Importance of Rehearsal Schedules

When talking about rehearsal, the first thing that often comes to our mind are performances or events. The word rehearsal has been associated with performances since it is commonly used in such situations. We also do rehearsals even if we are not performing and that is through studying and memorization. We see rehearsals as an important part of the preparation process for something and the reasons are listed below.

  • Test equipment – Before the actual event, aside from preparing the performers and other staff, the equipment used should and must also be checked to ensure that they are working properly. Rehearsals also allow time for doing repairs and replacements of broken or unwanted equipment for the event.
  • Check presentations – Visual aids and other forms of visuals used as presentations that audiences will view during the said event can be checked and evaluated. It prevents any chances of showing faulty, undesirable, and non-working presentations.
  • Helps establish unity and teamwork – Rehearsals often look and seem like a gathering because all of the members or participants of a particular event are summoned to the same place and attend the grand practice. This means that they have to work with different kinds of people to reach the same goal, which is to make the performance or event successful. This helps build and establish teamwork among the groups of different people. You might want to take a look at group schedules.
  • Familiarity with the crew – Rehearsals are also a way for different teams to know the crew or the people to get in touch with or to negotiate about their part in the event or their performance in the said event. So if there are any technical failures or problems that would occur, they would know who to approach.
  • Practice the performance in the actual venue – If you have tried performing or doing a presentation before, then you probably know that there is a big difference between practicing in your usual practice place and practicing in the actual venue. The physical setup is perhaps the very obvious thing that would first come to your mind and is also the very important one. Practicing in the actual venue allows you to determine where you should be when performing as well as allowing you to make slight changes to your presentation to match that of the venue. This way you will look and feel prepared throughout your presentation.
  • Get familiar with the flow of the program or event – The thing that can entirely ruin a program or event are participants or performers who don’t know about the flow of the program and which part they should appear. Through rehearsals, they will be briefed on how things will be done, when they are needed, as well as their obligations throughout the program or event. You can also check out event schedules.
  • Script rehearsals – Scripts are mostly used by program hosts. A well-planned and rehearsed script will likely result to a lively and interesting event. If the host has not practiced or planned about what to say and do, the program or event might turn out to be boring. A rehearsal is important unless the host or speaker is a pro or is a master at it.
  • Professionalism – Rehearsals take time and they are often scheduled on days that may not always be convenient for all. Still, it is highly important for everybody involved to attend the said rehearsal. It displays how professional one is and also shows their respect to other individuals who made time to attend.

Now that you know how important scheduled rehearsals are, you wouldn’t have a reason not to show up in any rehearsals in the future. More schedule-related titles are offered on our website. Use the tips below to help you make your schedule effective.

  • The schedule you will be making should always be presentable. It does not have to be grand or colorful; it just needs to be presentable in a way that people would want to read it when they see it.
  • The schedule should provide a complete set of details, like the what, when, where, why, and how of the said event, including a couple of instructions.
