A well-written résumé is a good way to put your foot through the door. It is a potential employer’s first impression of you and you’ve only got a page or so to do this. It’s a hard enough task, but imagine how much harder it is to fill out an application form. You have to make yourself stand out while filling in the exact same form as everyone else. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to fill out a job application form and some Generic Application for Employment forms you could download and print out to practice on.

  • Make sure you have all personal information you need like your driver’s licence, TIN, and your social security number.

  • List down your employment records in reverse chronological order. Also, make sure you know the complete name of your previous companies, their addresses, and contact information. If asked, write down your direct supervisors’ names and contact information too, along with your job title and responsibilities. Know when you started and ended your employment with previous companies and your final pay rate.

  • Prepare answers for gaps in your employment history. Do not leave this section blank. If you attended training or went to school during the gap, list these down. If you have no work history, list down volunteer works, extracurricular activities, or part-time jobs you may have had like babysitting or mowing lawns.

  • Record educational background. Write down the complete name of your school, its location, how long you attended it, and honors you may have received.

  • Prepare references. You may have employers, coworkers, or friends as references. Do not list down family members. Make sure they know you well and have good things to say about you. Tell them ahead if you are putting them down as a reference.

  • Do not leave anything blank.

  • Proofread

  • List down skills and credentials. Find a way to stand out from other candidates.

  • Write neatly and legibly.
