A vehicle sales contract acts as a legal document that details the legitimacy of the sale, not to mention the contract acting as a sales invoice as well as a receipt of the purchase. The importance of a vehicle sales contract is doubly significant when buying a used vehicle, to ensure the transfer of ownership is being done legally through the contract, which acts as a record of the sale. In today’s crime-prone society where lots of stolen vehicles get sold through back-channel unscrupulous deals, a vehicle sales contract can protect you and ensure you are not buying stolen property or a vehicle that’s being used in crime and are being recorded in police files.

To be thoroughly legitimate, a vehicle sales contract must include the following:

  • Parties Involved and Purpose of Transfer – States clearly the complete names of parties involved as well as the purpose of the transaction, such as the transfer of vehicle ownership from the seller to the buyer.
  • Date and Sales Price – States the exact date of the vehicle’s sale and the exact amount being paid by the buyer to the seller.
  • Detailed Description of the Vehicle – Details such as the make and model, vehicle identification number, engine and chassis numbers, even such items as sunroof and stereo modifications should be included. Each vehicle is unique from other models and these details should be clearly indicated in the sales contract. Full disclosure of the condition of the vehicle ensures the integrity of the sale and makes the buyer fully understand what state the vehicle is in at the time of purchase.

The vehicle sales contract should detail all the necessary documents supplied by the seller to the buyer. The seller may also choose to furnish other important documents such as the service history of the vehicle and the name of the shop and mechanic who handled the vehicle. This way, if the buyer wishes to continue the services of the shop that serviced the vehicle, he wouldn’t have any problems trying to find another shop who may not be as familiar with the vehicle’s service history.

Finally, both parties should sign and date the sales contract through the presence of a witness or notary public who will legally attest the sale of the sale of the vehicle. The buyer should then retain a copy of the contract just in case any problem arises from the sale of the vehicle.
