What is a Music Video?

Music videos are short films that utilize and integrate imagery and a song by a musical artist to artistically convey the message of the song or to promote their music to an audience. This is a marketing strategy to boost publicity and increase sales of their music.

How to Write a Music Video Proposal

Unlike other proposals, a music video proposal doesn’t necessarily need a lot of formal writing and format. Since music videos are short productions and music labels or studio executives are busy people, the proposal must be straight to the point. Even a two-page proposal will suffice as long as you’ve included the necessary information.  Below is the following information to include in your proposal:

1. Start With an Introduction

Put the title of the proposal at the top part of your proposal. Next, put the title of the song for the music video and its length, the name of the artist/s and the producers, and the due date when the music video production wraps up.

2. Describe the Song

Write what the song is about; give a background story and the message or idea you want to communicate to your audience as they watch the finished product.

3. Identify Your Target Audience

Write down your intended audience; you can include their demographics such as age, gender, ethnicity, etc.

4. Describe the Production

Write down what will happen during the production: How and where will you shoot your music video? How long is it going to take to shoot it? How long is it going to be edited before the post-production will deliver the finished product? Who will be appearing in the music video? (list down everyone including the artists, actors, and extras). What equipment will you be using to shoot the video and edit it later?

Furthermore, list down the names of the people involved in the production and post-production and their responsibilities.

5. Calculate the Budget

List down all the expenses you will have during the production such as equipment, costumes, scout location, payment for people participating in the production, transportation, food and beverages, and other miscellaneous expenses. Add all the expenses. Justify why these things cost the way you calculated them.

FAQs

What is a good budget for a music video?

The budget of making a music video depends on how elaborate the concept and production are. For a DIY music video, $300 can sufficient enough to make a music video. For low-budget production, it costs around $5,000-$10,000 to make a music video. For a bigger studio music video production, the budget can average to $200,000 — $500,000.

Music videos became widely popular in the early 1980s when they began to widely broadcast on television.

What are the different types of music videos?

  • Performance Music Videos: This is the most common and oldest type of music video. The video consists of an artist performing the song without any sort of background story happening behind the song. The video could portray the artist singing in a studio, during a concert, or in front of a crowd.
  • Narrative Music Videos: These types of music videos tell a story. This allows the artist to tell stories they want, how they want and, in the music genres they want.
  • Concept Videos: These videos give the artist the opportunity to express their artistic creativity. There are not usually used by mainstream artists since these videos are different from the usual performance and narrative videos.
  • Lyric Videos: These music videos are literally videos where the lyrics appear on the screen. This helps listeners know the words of the song.

Creating a music video proposal is an easy task if you already smooth out the production and concept process of the video. However, if you haven’t got around to that, you need to commit a lot of time to brainstorm and gather resources so make sure your focus and motivation are present.  But, if you’re ready to create the proposal, download our free sample templates provided above as your reference!
