What is a School Development Plan?

States or regions, cities, school districts and divisions usually require all schools, academies, universities, and other educational institutions to develop and submit for review a school development plan each year.

A school development plan is a comprehensive plan consisting of specific ideas, objectives, methods, and strategies for improvement. It should bring together, in a clear and effective way, the school priorities, the primary measures it will need to bring up standards, the resources committed to these, and the key results and targets it expects to fulfill.

How to Write a School Development Plan  

The book “The School Improvement Planning Handbook” explains that there are important requirements in writing a school development plan. Some of them are incorporating strategies based on scientifically based research, adopting policies and practices that ensure all student subgroups meet the state’s proficiency level of achievement, allocating funds for the high-quality professional development of teachers and principals, and many more.

1. Formulate your vision

2. Conduct a needs assessment

These are some common examples of goals and objectives for your school development plan. Establish your specific goals and objectives according to the needs of your students.

After establishing your goals and objectives, it is the perfect time for you to summarize your action steps. Some examples of action steps are setting up a consistent framework for curriculum components, prioritizing subjects areas for curriculum cycle, and many more.  Action steps are the specific methods and strategies to accomplish your goals and objectives.
