What is an Internship?

An internship is a learning experience for students that provides the opportunity to do professional work related to their field of study or career interest. It gives them also to develop skills that are crucial for a job. An internship is also beneficial for companies and organizations since the interns can help bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent, and potentially hire them to become full-time employees.

How to Assess Interns

1. Prepare for the Intern’s Last Day

Prepare for the interns’ last day in your company. Let your employees and interns prepare for the transition of their unfinished tasks a few days before the interns’ last day.   Let your employees, who served as mentors to your interns, prepare an assessment report.

2. Conduct an Evaluation

When the interns’ last day comes, the intern and their mentors should do evaluations to help assess both the internship program of the company and the intern’s performance and growth in their skills. The company can create an evaluation form for both the interns and mentors to fill out. The form must have relevant questions and information that is essential for the improvement of both the program and the interns.

The interns can note their experience in the company. They can note on projects they’ve undertaken, the camaraderie between their mentors and other employees, the company’s policy, the culture and work environment, the training they went through, lessons they’ve learned, and their overall view of the internship program.

The mentors can note the strengths and weaknesses of the interns in their performance. They can also evaluate their behavior, qualities, and their skills they have learned throughout their experience in the company. The interns and the mentors can also discuss the assessment form during their exit interviews. They can elaborate further on the information they input in the form.

After the interns completed their internship hours and if you’re the type of company that sells products and if can afford them, you can hire your interns to promote your company’s internship program to the colleges or universities they attend. You can give them specific tasks to comply with for them to promote your program.

3. Assessment for Hiring Interns

Aside from assessing interns after their internship program has been completed, you also have to do a pre-assessment for hiring interns. Unless if your company accepts all interns that apply to you, your company may not have all the resources to hire every intern; or if your company has some standards to maintain and you only hire the best of the contenders.

When assessing interns, you commonly assess these qualities to know if they are qualified enough to do their internship in your company:

  • Good performance from their school,
  • Skills and knowledge they have to deliver their job well,
  • Capacity for analysis and decision making
  • Working capacity in the real work; like a real employee does
  •  Drive and enthusiasm
  • Teamwork and camaraderie
