Difference between an Invoice and a Receipt

Invoices and simple general receipts contain or include the same details and are used in any applicable sale transaction. This is what makes them almost the same, but not entirely. A lot of people are led to think that they actually mean the same thing and this is what created the confusion of whether an invoice and a receipt are the same. Although an invoice may be very similar and often looks like a receipt, it is however used differently.

An invoice is used to demand payment or notify the the customers or buyers for the payment of the goods or services that they owe. A sample receipt, on the other hand, serves as a proof that payment has been made for the goods or services sold to the customer or buyer. It is also means that the seller acknowledges that the buyer has already paid for the goods or services they have used.

The easiest way to differentiate an invoice from a receipt is the time when they are issued. Because you will be demanding for payment in an invoice, it is issued by the seller to the customer before payment is made. After making the payment, the seller issues a receipt to the customer as proof of the payment transaction that took place.
