An appraisal is the act of assessing or estimating something or someone’s worth. To appraise is to put a certain person or object under thorough examination and rating him or her or according to the standards being set. In a corporate setting, an appraisal is done during certain time periods in order to determine eligibility for either regularization, promotion, benefits or salary increase.

Different kinds of appraisals require various formats that serve the same purpose, which is to find out if a certain person, object, establishment, or, in most cases, employee deserves recognition, mentoring, or feedback on performance to improve.

Employee Performance Appraisals

In a company or business, it is always important that the business owners, investors, and entrepreneurs feel like they are getting their money’s worth in any form possible. In order to make sure that their investments have right returns, it is important to assess and appraise all parts of the company, most especially the human resources or the employees themselves. Employee performance appraisal is an ordered system that allows management to sufficiently assess the value, contribution, behavior, and traits of certain workers in order to determine their usefulness and worth in the company.

Purpose of Employee Performance Appraisals

Even as children, we have been appraised by various persons such as our parents and teachers through the means of instructions, exams, assessments, and other instruments. In a company, there are employee performance evaluations that are done in different time periods such as monthly, quarterly, or annually. These assessments help the corporation or entity determine a variety of things according to metrics. Here are some of the purposes for employee performance appraisals:

  • Determines which employees are the best and which ones are the worst.

Ranking the employees by order of performance is important in running a business. Giving equal treatment to the best and the worst employees could demoralize the best ones and make the worst ones more complacent in their performance. It is important to determine which ones should be given more attention and mentoring and which workers already have their hand at the job and deserve an occasional kudos or reward for job well done.

  • Deliberates the usefulness of an employee.

It may sound harsh but some businesses cannot afford to keep incompetent employees. Even if workers are not ranked against each other, individual performance matters a lot, especially to small companies that pay almost the same amount to all members. Performance appraisals are important because it allows the company to assess whether the employee deserves the pay he or she is getting, or not.

  • Motivates good employees to do better and bad employees to do good.

In performance appraisals, especially those that involve incentives such as money, freebies, and certain privileges, employees are more determined to do their best in their craft if they get rewards in exchange. Seeing employees do well in their appraisal and get benefits off having good results, good employees will strive to be competitive and do better, while bad employees will also strive to do better and somehow have their hand at the incentives as well.

  • Reassures the employees that the company values quality.

When your management does several employee performance appraisals, the employee will feel the impact of his or her capacity as a worker. If a company constantly does quality assurance checks and assessments, the employee will, in turn, do his best to pass the standards so as not to lose his job. He or she will strive to do better in order to get good scores or not be one of the lowest scorers in the company.

Self-Appraisal

Sometimes, even non-employees or individuals need to reflect on their performance as a person from time to time. Self-appraisal is a method you use to evaluate your own behavior or capacity, enabling you to reflect on the things you need to change or improve on as a person, employee, family member, or organization member. Sometimes, self-appraisals are used by management to see if the employee is self-aware of his or her own performance in the company or business.

Self-Appraisal Benefits

Looking for your own faults and shortcomings could be a challenge, especially when you feel like they are either unnecessary to change or an essential part of who you are. Regardless of your hesitations, here some reasons why self-appraisal is beneficial to you as a person, employee, and member of a community:

  • One gets to know himself or herself better, in relation to being perceived by others.

Theoretically, the only one who knows you best is yourself since you spend all your time and waking moment with yourself. However, you may have certain behavior that you don’t mind but affects other people in certain ways. Some self-appraisal questions give you realization on what issues other people consider a problem and which ones are okay.

  • You find out your strengths and weaknesses.

Some of the key evaluations in a self-assessment is knowing the strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, it helps in evaluating what other positions you should be assigned in.

  • You will know existing performance issues and can make steps on slowly improving them.

Self-appraisals allow you to determine how you have been doing so far, what you have problems with regard to productivity, and what you need to do to change them. Whether it is habitual absenteeism or tardiness, you will find out the performance issues you have and make small improvements on remedying them.

  • No one else will judge you on your own assessment.

One of the biggest advantages of evaluating yourself is that no one else knows about it unless you choose to tell someone or show someone that information. When no one else can comment on your evaluation, you can easily be more honest, and honesty leads to pinpointing real problems and coming up with real solutions to solve them.

If the self-appraisal is for company purposes, then you may have to be lesser honest and more impressive, but never too dishonest to the point of improbability.

Home Appraisal

When you are planning to sell your home or apply for a mortgage, you would need to have your home appraised. A home appraisal is the evaluation of an establishment for the true or fair market value; it helps homeowners find out how much their building is worth.

Most appraisals not only include your property but also the surrounding properties and how much they are worth. With considerations that you can control, the current condition of the property, the location, and what goes on in the environment could increase or decrease your home’s market value.

Tips on Increasing Your Home’s Appraisal Value

Having a high market value is something that property investors and homeowners hope for. When your property has high value, you can sell it at a high price. Appraisals are conducted by trained professionals, but here are a few tips to increase your property’s appraisal value:

  • Hide your property’s real age.

Make your home seem like it was just made a few months ago. Even if the building design looks like it belongs in the 80s, but if the home looks like it has just been recently purchased, then it should get a higher appraisal value.

  • Make repairs.

Houses are often valued in $500 increments, so repairing broken windows and cracked ceilings should be an investment worth considering. Plaster racks, stained walls, and bad odor could work against your favor, so always consider repairing such problems.

  • Fix your home’s surroundings as well.

Although home appraisals are generally for the house’s value, its surroundings can greatly affect how it will be appraised. Take the time to fix the lawn, garage doors, garden, and other fixtures in the front lawn or backyard.

  • Take note of all repairs.

Although the appraisers will not refund you for your repairs, remembering things like new roof or windows will work in your favor.

Car Appraisal

Real estate properties are not the only ones that get appraisals. Cars and other vehicles also go through appraisals in order to  determine their market value. Second-hand car owners want to have their car appraised in order to determine how much they can fairly sell their car for. Although most people opt to sell their cars at a slightly higher price, the appraisal will help in evaluating its true current value.

What Car Appraisers Look Out For

Upon having your car evaluated, you should do a preliminary checkup in order to estimate how much your car is worth by considering the following:

  • The overall exterior condition such as the body and paint condition, tires, windows, door handles, and windshield
  • The overall interior condition such as car seats or upholstery, overhead light, dashboard, steering wheel, and shafts
  • The car tags and registrations
  • The condition of all buttons, controls, and gadgets inside the car
  • The condition of the things under the hood and trunk of the car
  • Check the dashboard monitoring status such as fluid gauges and odometer readings
  • Scan vehicle identification number (VIN) and check the car’s history
