Peer evaluation is a necessary tool for self-regulation among members for both administrators and subordinates alike. Its primary goal is to improve performance and to maintain a school or company’s standard of quality. In the academe, teachers are often subjected to peer evaluation annually for advancement and tenure purposes. For professionals in most companies, peer evaluation is an important step to gain certification. Besides the teaching profession, this process is often practiced in the fields of engineering, accounting, and medicine.

Generally, a peer evaluation provides assessment of most relevant activities in any setting. An example of how to make an evaluation effective is to delegate tasks to participants and let them submit their work. They are then asked to evaluate the work of their peers. This type of evaluation, however, is intended for short-term, immediate results and should not be gauged as the total productivity as a whole of an individual. Long-term evaluation techniques are needed to properly gauge an individual’s productivity and performance. While peer evaluation can produce results, they may not be as effective as others may tend to believe.

There are a couple of issues regarding the accuracy of peer evaluations that should make reviewers aware before judging an individual being evaluated about his or her competence. They should keep in mind that there are other ways besides evaluations that can gauge the competence of an individual, and peer evaluations should not be relied upon alone.

Some of the factors that can affect peer evaluation results are the following:

  • respondents may rate their friends high on the scale while giving others low grades;
  • respondents may form a group among themselves and will try to evaluate each other with equal scores;
  • the point system approach may look good on a theoretical basis but would not reflect a fair summary response for grading; and
  • evaluation procedures may be too complex and daunting to respondents when required to read a lot along several pages.

Those are just some of the challenges meeting reviewers when trying to require and gauge performances based on peer evaluation alone. Putting a fair amount of reasoning by being skeptical of very high grades or very low grades can remove some of the dubious performance ratings.
