If you have a passion to be of service to your fellow countrymen, then a job in civil service is perfect for you. A profession in public service demands the utmost performance and quality of work.

First expressed popularly by US president Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address, a government is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Presently, world systems are predominantly democratic, and it is widely recognized that governments are established because of its citizens. More importantly, governments exist to be of service to its people.

Under any and all governmental departments, civil servants should be able to demonstrate nationalism, accountability, excellence, efficiency, and transparency. This is why applications for professions in public office—or federal resumes as they are called in the United States—are much lengthier than applications to the private or corporate spheres. Everything must be accounted for, and excellence in work must be reflected. Read this post and these Sample Resumes for reference.

A federal resume is formatted like any standard resume, and bears more or less the same categories and headings. But whereas a three-page resume is frowned upon in private employment, it is only the average in civil service. Resumes could even be five to seven pages long, because everything has to be listed and accounted for. No detail in one’s work history and competencies is considered irrelevant when applying for a post at the public realm.

Hiring committees will carefully and thoroughly assess every detail to applications, to completely determine a candidate’s competence for civil service.

Writing a Federal Resume

Be exhaustive and accurate. Attempting to fluff your application entries with omissions, exaggerations, and etc., will bring you legal problems. Include every relevant detail to employment.

  • Personal information
  • Work history
  • Education
  • Internships
  • Volunteer or charity work
  • Certifications and licenses
  • Awards, honors, and recognition
  • Affiliations
  • Programs, courses, and seminars attended
  • Job-related training

Civil Service Certification

A person interested to work in public office must pass a nationally administered examination that will test one’s eligibility for the work. Indicate the date in which you took the examination, the date that you received your score, and your grade point.

Resume Formats

Tailor-fit the presentation of your qualifications according to the job description of the position you are applying for.

  • The chronological resume is centered on work history, which should be listed in a reverse-chronological manner. You start with your most recent experience down to your very last.
  • The functional resume shifts the spotlight to skills and competencies.
  • The hybrid/combination resume contains both features.

Fresh graduates will have no trouble applying for civil service positions, because educational achievements are highly regarded. The only requirement is that they pass the national exams that certify them for eligibility to public service. For reference, see these Student Resume Examples.
