What Is a Storyboard in Video Production?

A storyboard is a tool used in any video production, whether it is a movie, television commercial, video project, etc. It is basically a pre-visualized idea drawn or illustrated on paper showing how a particular video production will look like when shot. Using a storyboard allows directors to plan how they want each key scene to unfold. On set, a storyboard will make it easier for the film production crew to do their specific jobs. There are many types of storyboards such as a photography storyboard, which is also useful for photographers doing a photo shoot.

How to Make a Storyboard

Although there are several storyboard software available to help you create one, a pen and paper is the easiest and fastest way to do it. When making a storyboard, your drawing doesn’t have to be perfect since it’s only a rough draft. Now let’s go over the steps to help you make your own storyboard. You may also see visual storyboards.

1. The first thing to do before creating your storyboard is to make a template. You can do this by drawing rectangles for each key scene in your storyboard and leaving spaces for your script and description. You can also use a storyboard sample for your template.

2. In each box, illustrate in sequence the scenes that you have in mind. It should describe the composition of each particular shot. You can use stick figures for your drawing and can use arrows to indicate movement of objects. You may also see vertical storyboard samples.

3. Below each box, write the script or dialogue for each scene including the description of how it is going to happen. Also describe the angles of the camera and the movements. You may also see script storyboard template

4. You can also add details such as the sound effects, the music, and other important notes. You may also see commercial storyboards.

Additionally, a film storyboard is also available if you specifically need that type of storyboard.
