Imagine this: You are a hiring manager. Today, you are about to read at least fifty resumes for a job opening. What would leave a lasting impression on you? Now let’s go back to reality—what do you have that will leave a mark to your prospective job? This is what we call a personal brand.

Your personal brand is not just a simple list of skills and dreams you have; it is you promising an employer that you are valuable, necessary, and that you are who they’re looking for. Your personal brand, in other words, is your reputation. A personal brand statement tells a potential employer who you are in the workplace. It tells them, in a brief manner, if you are the brand they will “buy.” For you to make a good first impression, download and study our free Sample Statements.

It’s quite complicated to pack in a sentence or two who you are as a person. That is why in making an excellent personal branding statement, you really have to look into yourself and start asking the hard questions. The first step is introspection, or self-analysis. The following are some queries that will help you find out what you are as a person and are extremely important in writing your personal brand statement:

  • What do you really want to do in life? What would forever make you feel enthusiastic in doing it?
  • What are your principles in life? What values inform your decisions?
  • What makes you unique? What are your qualities that would make you you?
  • What are your goals? Not cars or other material possessions, what is it that if you can achieve it you’ll feel complete?
  • What are your greatest strengths? What are those skills that would make you invaluable to your potential employer?

After answering these questions, you can start studying our free downloadable sample personal brand statements and start formulating your own. Something that you must not confuse with personal brand statement is what we call a “personal statement,” which is an essay that gives details on what a person is like as a colleague. If you belong to the medical field, which requires a rather specialized skill set, you may want to look at our Residency Personal Statement Samples so that your personal statements are attuned to your field.

You must also realize that other people can influence your personal brand. It therefore makes it necessary for you to be aware of how others perceive you. Ask your closest friends, coworkers, mentors, even mentees (if you have any) of what you are like. You can use their answers in formulating your personal brand statement. If they say anything negative about you, and if it is widely known, you must start fixing it so it won’t come back to haunt you later. Our free downloadable personal brand statement samples come in Word (.docx) and PDF format. You can use them to help you examine yourself and write your own personal brand statement. Remember, be genuine and never oversell.
