We all have our differences, even twins. But our diversity has made the world a more interesting place. Imagine if you meet somebody who looks and acts exactly like you. And as if that isn’t weird enough, every single one of your favorites is the same as his/her. How can people ever tell the difference between the two of you? That’s why diversity is awesome. Below are Sample Statements that can help you visualize my point.

A diversity statement is a write-up that expresses a person or a community’s commitment to advocate diversity. Diversity is the state of being varied, to welcome uniqueness, differences, and individuality. If you are dedicated to pursuing diversity—in school, in the workplace, everywhere—here are some tips on how you can create a powerful and effective statement:

  • Let them know your story. Everybody loves stories, especially when they are true. If you have had struggles before and you have overcome them, people will certainly love to know that. Let them know how you have arrived at your perspectives and advocacy.
  • Keep culture in mind. Express your insights and knowledge on different cultures and how important that is to diversity.
  • Service. Write about the times you have rendered services that strive to achieve and promote diversity. State how you have served your community and the things you felt and learned from the experience.
  • Commit. Write about how you can further dedicate yourself to doing acts or deeds for diversity. Be specific and direct with the things that you are willing to do.

Your statement should sound personal, sensitive, and reflective. Although it’s your opinion, it should answer to issues and be socially relevant. One of the things that everybody has been trying to pray for and achieve is unity and peace, among all nations, people from all walks of life, beyond cultures—to be able to work together and make peace. But then, we can’t eliminate the fact that we all have our own perspectives, our own stand and battles to fight. That right there is diversity.

But there can still be unity despite all of our differences. Because we are human beings and, more importantly, we all want to make a brighter world. We don’t necessarily have to look, talk, and act the same. How will we ever tell each other apart? The point of diversity is that we are all unique. I’m different. You’re different, and so is the rest of the world. But think about it, isn’t it even cooler that despite our personal opinions and qualities, we can still agree and respect each other’s differences.
