A guide to writing a diversity and inclusion statement

  • Capture your readers’ attention

Start your statement with an attention-grabbing headline. It should be able to compel the readers to read more of what you are as a company and what values you have that will make your workers at ease that they are welcomed by their company and their colleagues. The headline gives a short summary of your D&I that will also guide the readers to what to expect in the next subheadings that roughly contain the values upheld by your company. You may also describe the necessary steps to realize this commitment that is more often than not should be reflected in the day-to-day operations of the company. These introductory paragraphs should tell the foundations of what you want your employees or customers to know about your organization.

  • Be consistent with your theme

The construction of your sentences that make up your diversity and inclusion statement is dedicated to describing the ways and steps on how to achieve your goals. Include the scope of your services in terms of specific places, cities, or countries and your reaches around the world. Your commitment is not the sole responsibility of the bosses or heads, but more importantly, it is the guiding principle of every worker that they contribute so much to the productivity of the company. Thus, the statement must be able to reach out to the employees that are “included” and considered in every decision the company makes.

  • Promote team effort

If there’s anything that the goals and objectives of the company should anchor on, it is inculcating to the minds of its employees and workers that their productivity and longevity as a group depends on how serious they take a team effort in every task they do. Even in writing your D&I statement, soliciting the inputs of those who are working closely with customers and clients should participate in writing it. It is simply because they experience firsthand how the customers react and respond to the gratefulness and dismay of the company’s products and services that they will be able to formulate ideas on how to pacify negative reactions and to prevent it from happening again.

  • Walk the talk

Putting into words the D&I of the company is only the first step to putting it into action. After creating it, the next step is to mobilize it into action in all of the company’s major operational procedures. It sets the baseline metrics that measure the quality of work and output of the company’s processes and identifies its weak parts targeted for improvement. A mechanism is then designed to broadcast the D&I so that all employees will be able to grasp it as a whole and carry its values in their tasks. To effectively do this, perhaps, the company wants to train certain people or department heads on how to incorporate such principles into each operation.

What is diversity?

In its most simple definition, it is the practice of including a range of different things and having different characteristics toward working on a common goal.

What does equity mean?

Providing the means to achieve equal or fair results for people who have unique traits and backgrounds.

What does unconscious bias mean?

When someone is unaware of the discrimination, description, or treatment of others that are sometimes rooted in the sexual orientation, religion, race, nationality, etc of those directed by the bias treatment.

The diversity and inclusion is just the stepping stone to creating a workplace tailored fit for everyone to enjoy the benefits of their differences and having a sense of purpose in their line of work. While the mission and vision statements serve as a guidepost in an organization, the same thing should be true for the diversity and inclusion statement. Working towards creating a welcoming culture among employees results in favorable treatment towards customers and clients. When that is achieved and perfected in some way, productivity can be seen climbing up toward success.
