They need to establish objectives and find ways on how each agenda tackles on the problems that hound each organization and how teams must work together to prevent such problems from happening year after year.

Besides the usual procedure of doing minutes of a meeting, Team meetings should be aware of the pitfalls of team effort. In most team meetings, participants are made aware of the The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, an excellent book about business management by Patrick Lencioni. This book has become a sort of bible of team meetings and explores the root cause of how a team effort fails. The book uses a leadership fable as an example of what happens to a company and how it’s struggling to the point of failing on its business.

When it was found out that the management was not working as a team, the following root causes were explored and found out to be the five dysfunctions of a team:

  • Absence of Trust
Absence of trust came as a result of team members not admitting their weaknesses. Everyone was found out to be vulnerable in a little of each field, but pride got in the way and everyone pretended to know everything. Instead of being productive, they wasted their time on their defensive behaviors, hence the failure of the team.
  • Fear of Conflict
Lack of trust in each team member made them incapable of debates on essential matters. This led to avoidance of conflict and an air of artificial harmony prevailed. It was the best of example pretentiousness and made the team incapable of openly expressing their opinions. In the end, inferior decisions were made.
  • Lack of Commitment
Due to lack of conflict, team members also displayed lack of commitment and an air of ambiguity prevailed. This led to absolute unproductivity of the team and contributed to the failure of the company.
  • Avoidance of Accountability
When team members don’t have any commitments, then they don’t have any accountability. Without accountability, there was no progress.
  • Inattention to Results
Team members have lost their drive to be results oriented. With inattention to results came lack of interest, and team members began looking for interests elsewhere and totally neglected their own company.

While the book uses a fictional company and team members as an example, the problems presented are very real and hound almost every company. When these things happen, productivity drops to its lowest level and the company fails to function effectively. In order to function effectively, a team must therefore put the company’s interests first before their own. Team effort doesn’t come smoothly but oftentimes, expressing opinions openly bring out the best results in the team and the company it represents.
