What are Business Hours?

Business hours, also called office working hours, are the time of the day when business is typically conducted. In most Western countries, the standard business hours are between 9 am to 5 pm. although some agencies start as early as 7 am and end as late as 6 pm.

How to Write Time Properly

1. Writing Time in Words or Numerals

When you write the time of day, you can use either words or numerals. If you are using numerals, informal writing, you have to include both hours and minutes. In less formal writing, however, you can omit the minutes. Writing using the numeral format of the time is helpful in scientific or technical writing. However, there are instances that you need to write down the time in word form when it is part of a full sentence in descriptive or literary writing, or when you use a 12-hour clock format, or when you’re referring to an approximate time (such as saying, “eleven-thirty” or “two forty-five”).

2. Writing AM and PM

The abbreviations AM and PM is only used when you write the time as numerals.

  • AM is short for ante meridiem which means “before noon.”
  • PM is short for post meridiem which means “afternoon.”

Use AM and PM to indicate the time of day when you’re using a 12-hour clock format so the reader will be able to tell the difference between midnight and midday. However, you don’t need to include the AM and PM abbreviations with a 24-hour clock format because the time of the day is already obvious.

Writing AM and PM abbreviations has several ways and it includes the following:

  • It can be written in ALL CAPS/uppercase or small caps/lower case (12 AM, 12 AM, or 12 am)
  • It could include with or without periods between the letters (e.g., 8 PM or 8 P.M.)
  • With or without a space after the number (e.g., 1 AM or 1 AM)

If you’re writing the time in their numeral format, be consistent by applying only one style throughout the whole document.

3. Using O’clock Term

The term “o’clock” is a shorter version of the phrase “of the clock,” as it means to show that a number in the sentence refers to a time. When using the term  “o’clock” make sure to use it with exact hours only. Examples are “ten o’clock”, “twelve o’clock”, or “three o’clock”.  Don’t use the term when you include the minutes when you’re telling the time.
