We are not ignorant to oral speeches. In fact, we have heard a lot of speeches in our lifetime. A speech is an oration or something that is being said or discussed in important gatherings, like graduation, weddings, or award ceremonies. Public speakers perform a speech mainly to inform, to persuade, and to entertain a lot of people, especially those who have the same ideals, much like how it is done with speech in literature, even though they are not entirely the same.

Different Types of Figure of Speech

A figure of speech is a single word or phrase whose meaning is not based on the literal meaning of the said or word or phrase. There are many types of figure of speech that you may encounter if you are into literature. Here we have gathered some types of figure of speech and they are briefly discussed below.

  • Metaphor – A metaphor makes use of ordinary words and applies it to something that is not related to its literal meaning. It is used to compare two objects that are not alike.

Example: Drowning in a sea of grief.
He is having a broken heart.
Don’t play with fire.

  • Personification – This type of figure of speech is used by most writers to give inanimate objects human qualities and do human actions. It is similar to a metaphor because it also compares two different things.

Examples: She let the sun touch her skin.
The stars are happy dancing in the moonlight.
The news on television took me by surprise.

  • Hyperbole – A hyperbole is a type of figure of speech that uses extreme exaggeration to say or describe something.

Examples: I have a ton of work to do.
I feel so hungry I can eat a whole cow.
I have waited for you for ages.

  • Understatement – While a hyperbole uses extreme exaggeration, an understatement presents something in an unimportant tone or that is less than what is actually is.

Examples: While looking at a pretty girl: She is not that pretty.
Just ranked first in class after the test: The test was okay.

  • Pun – A pun is a play on words. Ordinary words are manipulated and given a different meaning to make it funny.

Example: Boiled eggs are hard to beat.

  • Simile – It compares one thing from another thing that is totally different from the other.

Example: She is as cute as a kitten.

How to Conclude a Speech

Starting a speech is hard enough, but you should wait until you get to the ending because it is 10 times harder. Like you, we also have challenges when it comes to writing a speech, so prepare some things that would help you create a good conclusion to your speech.

  • Make use of speech examples to get ideas on how they make their conclusion.
  • Ask if there are any questions. This is the most commonly used and abused conclusion to a speech, especially in forums or lectures.
  • Saying thank you is the simplest and easiest way that one can end their speech.
  • Use the title of your speech as your conclusion. Going back to the main point of your speech would make a good ending.
  • Choose a good quotation. Some speakers would use their favorite quotation to provide a piece of advice that is related to the topic before they say goodbye to their audience.
  • Some would use a famous saying and then twist it to become funny or amusing and then they end the speech.
  • End your speech with a call to action that is related to the topic.
  • Most of all, it is important that you let your audience know that your speech is done.

What Not to Say and Do During Your Speech

What not to say:

  • Do not make any excuses, like you are not prepared because you do not have much time and so on. You will just sound unprofessional and that is a major turn off.
  • Do not say, “Hello! Can you hear me?” as your opening in a speech. It will make you sound funny.
  • Avoid using fillers. Fillers will make you sound not confident and will give the audience an impression that you are not reliable.
  • Do not tell your audience that you are nervous and that you are not really good with public speaking.

What not to do:

  • Avoid reading your notes or off your slides, especially if you are doing an informative speech. Your audience can definitely read them. Instead, explain your topic in your own words.
  • You should not put your hands in your pocket when you are delivering your speech.
  • Do not make fun of anybody in the audience or in the room.
  • If you are delivering a speech, you should not stare or look at the floor. Instead, face your audience and look at them while you deliver your speech.
