What Is a Packing List?

A packing list is an itemized checklist where one can write down the essentials that they should be bringing with them out of the home. A packing list may include items such as clothes, toiletries, documents, food, linens, books, and other miscellaneous items that one may bring on a road trip, travel abroad, or even when moving house. There are many types of packing checklists that are specific to one purpose, such as the vacation packing list, school packing list, shipping packing list, camper packing list, summer packing list, and many others.

How To Create a Packing List?

Creating a packing list is quite easy if you have the right materials to write on and of course, your plans and ideas. Here are some tips and advice that you can use or follow when you begin to make your own packing list.

1. List Down The Items You Want To Pack

The first thing you will need to do when making a packing list is write down everything you need to bring to wherever you are going. Clothes, accessories, shoes, medicines, documents, write them all down. It is not time for you yet to organize, as when you try to organize at this point, it will just overwhelm you. If you are with family, write down what your parents, your children, or your spouse may want to bring by asking them outright.

2. Segregate Them According To Category

Now, when you think you have everything figured out, it is time for you to categorize your list. For example, lotions and toothpaste would go to toiletries, hangers will go to extras, cereals would go to baby items, and so forth. If you are traveling together with family, make sure that you create a different list for them so that you won’t get confused about who is bringing what and how many items are they going to bring. Categorizing will also help you organize your things when you are putting them together in the baggage.

3. Always Leave Spaces for Notes

It may look useless knowing that what you are writing is already a checklist, but it does not hurt to have that little space in the paper where you can write notes. This can be used to list things that you have forgotten to bring and may help remind you that you need to get them during your trip or whenever you need them. Notes are also useful when you are bringing back souvenirs and other items from your trip so that you can be reminded about them when unpacking.

4. Always Indicate the Date

The very important thing that you should not forget to write is the date for when that packing list is effective. This will help you remember that you have a flight to prepare for, when your pregnancy due is, or that you have a summer camp to attend this weekend. Also, if you have a to-do list, daily planner, or daily schedule, do not forget to write down “Preparing a packing list” as one of your tasks.

Why should I make a packing list?

We tend to get so excited when we go outside our home to go travel, or when there are occasions in our lives where we are required to travel, that we forget some of the most essential things that we could have brought with us while away from home. A packing list will help you make sure that everything you need to bring along is accounted for.

What usually goes into the packing list?

In the packing list, you will find categorized materials that one would most likely bring when they are away from home either for vacation leave or for other reasons. These include toiletries, books, medicines, gears, newborn supplies, food, tools, documents, and household items.

When should I make my packing list?

If you are about to leave home within a week, then write your packing list on the first day of that week before you travel. This is to give you more time to organize your thoughts as well as assess how many items your baggage can carry.

Packing your things may be tedious and time-consuming, but with a good and organized packing list, you can even maximize time management as well as become stress-free.
