In this rat-race world, it has become more difficult for job seekers to get hired in the jobs that they desire. More often than not, job seekers settle down for jobs out of convenience. Why does this happen? The usual reason must be that their resumes got into the trash even before the hiring manager was able to turn to the second page of their resumes.

A resume, in order to be effective, must present at first glance the job candidate’s clearly defined career objective. In this manner, it will be easier for the hiring manager to determine whether or not your career objective is concurrent with their company’s goals.

Crafting your resume objective can be a cumbersome task, especially if you’re new to it. Hence for you convenience, we have collected Sample Objectives for you to choose from. These templates can serve as basis for your objective writing.

What Is a Resume Objective

A resume objective is a statement of your goals for employment as well as your salient qualifications. This is usually located at the first and topmost section of a resume. While statement of a resume objective is optional, this may play a huge part in convincing the hiring manager regarding one’s qualifications.

What Does It Contain?

An effective resume objective is concise. It contains the following:

  • the personal character traits of the job applicant,
  • the specific role the applicant desires to fill in, and
  • how the applicant’s performance in this role can help in achieving company goals.

Do You Need One?

An objective section is not always necessary. Some opt to forego this section altogether.

When Is a Formal Objective Necessary?

A formal objective is only necessary when the job applicant is either

  • an entry-level worker (meaning, he/she hasn’t experienced working for a formal job previously), or
  • making a career change (a person who, having garnered years of experience in a specific career, chooses to shift his/her career path in a completely different line of work or industry such as a lawyer who makes a career shift by applying for a literary professor position).

The root of this necessity is the fact that both of these applicants do not possess the necessary work history that can supply the hiring manager with an overview or idea of where their career path is going. Indeed, no hiring manager would want to waste their company’s resources by hiring someone whose career goals are inconsistent with the nature of the company’s job positions and goals.

Tips in Crafting Your Resume Objective

1. Don’t make it too long. Three sentences will do.

2. Don’t make it all about you. The common mistake job applicants usually commit is by rambling on and on about how being in the company can nourish their career instead of vice versa.

3. Don’t make a cookie-cutter objective. Generalized objectives are about as inutile as a dull knife on a piece of hard root crop.

4. Emphasize how you aim to add value to the company’s goals or visions.

5. It must contain only three parts:

  • statement of your most salient qualification,
  • specific career goals, and
  • how you want to add value to the company.
