A medical director may serve an administrative function under the supervision of the executive director and is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the medical practice delivery system in accordance with the organization’s standards. In the absence of the executive director, a medical director takes on the role of delivering quality medical services and assures the continued efficient operation of an organization including budgetary decisions and overall planning.

Other management functions of a medical director include,

  • supervision of scheduling of medical staff including call and leave concerns,
  • responsible for continuing professional education of medical staff including service training and orientation,
  • advising on purchases of medical equipment and checking on supply inventories,
  • providing counsel to personnel of the medical staff,
  • supervision of physician assistants and nurse practitioners,
  • overseeing documentation in care planning,
  • handling patient complaints and taking action to correct whatever needs to be improved or change in patient handling,
  • reviewing concerns and suggestions from medical staff on their concerns with the executive director,
  • handling physician behavior and malpractices, and
  • delegates responsibility for quarterly medical agreement reviews for medical staff on appropriate care management.
