Responsibilities of a Copy Editor

While there are several variations of a copy editor’s duties depending on the type of manuscript or content he/she is editing, there are duties, however, that almost all types of copy editor need to perform. Some of those are the following:

  • maintains awareness of new words or phrases coming into popular usage with view of ensuring that these are appropriate for the readership;
  • liaising regularly with authors and content writers via phone or e-mail;
  • discusses and resolves any potentially libelous section with the writer and relevant administrative officer;
  • oversees the work of indexers, typesetters, and graphic designers (if applicable);
  • ensures that the content is free of grammatical errors, inconsistencies, and redundancies;
  • possesses a working knowledge in editing which is appropriate for the type of content being written in the company;
  • instructs the production team regarding the design features of the content; and
  • ensures that publications are timely and utilized resources (manpower, financial, etc.) within the budgeted frame for each specific content.
