Before graduating from high school, students are required to submit their choice of college courses and the names of the universities they want to attend. While others are still deciding whether they’d go attend college or make job applications, some students already have made their choices and are only waiting for their college applications to go through after graduation. Applying to attend universities and colleges does not look as easy as it seems since they are more strict when it comes to requirements and qualifications. Today, we will discuss college applications and how you can make those forms that you can use to gather student information as needed.

What Is College Application?

College application is the process students or individuals undergo when applying to enter a tertiary academic institution. College applications aim to assess the student’s grades, family background, family income, skills, employment history, or work experience (for those taking postgraduate studies and ETEEAP). To gather information efficiently, colleges and universities provide applicants with forms that they can fill out immediately for submission.

How to Make College Application Forms?

The format and contents of a college application form depend on the requirement and policies set by the university or college for student admission. Although with the same look as an enrollment form, there are elements in the application form which make them different. Here are some of the components which you need to incorporate when making your college application form.

1. Personal Data

The first section you need to make when creating an application form is the student’s personal data. The personal data section should include the applicant’s full name, age, address, contact information, parents’ name, birthdate, place of birth, citizenship, and even religion (if you are a religion-centric institution). You can also opt to ask for spouse details if you think this is applicable to your students.

2. Academic Background

The next section of your form should be focused on the student’s academic history. Inquire about their senior high school academic strands (STEM, ABM, or HUMSS), academic awards, name of the school they have last attended, date of graduation, and if they ever took any college entrance exams prior to the application.

3. Work Experience

Some students who have graduated from high school have not directly enrolled in any college or university to get a job. That is why most of them have work experience before getting tertiary education in the hopes of saving money for enrollment and tuition fees. Asking them about their work experience is especially helpful for those who are applying for ETEEAP (Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program).

4. Family Background

If the applicant also wants to apply for a scholarship, it would be best for you to know their family background. How much is the annual net income of the family? Do the parents have businesses or jobs? Do they have siblings that are also in school, thus having difficulties in paying tuition? Knowing their story helps you take a glimpse of their character and their intention on why they want to apply as a student in your institution.

5. Personal Statement

Last but not least, the personal statement section is the part where you need the students to write down their reasons for picking your college as their first choice for furthering their education. The good thing about reading an applicant’s personal statement is that you are able to know the student and assess whether their goals are synonymous with your own vision and mission in giving quality education.

What are the disadvantages of college applications?

Because the process of applying for college and university is through a form or an e-mail, some institutions cannot automatically assess the applications and reply to applicants in real-time. Thus, some applicants assume that their applications are already accepted, only to find out later soon that it is not the case. This is bad for applicants as they won’t have enough time or opportunity to find another suitable college before classes resume.

How many pages should a college application form have?

A college application form is usually just a one-page document with both the front and back sides available for filling in information. However, some forms can have two pages depending on the requirements and data needed by the colleges from their applicants.

How is the college application done?

When trying to apply for college, applicants have two options: either they send an application cover letter through e-mail or directly visit the institution and fill out their application forms. However, both applications will be replied to by the institution through an e-mail letter that notifies the applicant of their acceptance or rejection.

Going to college is another big step if one wishes to further not only their education but also to improve their chances of getting better opportunities in the future. Become an institution that sees the best in its students and help them achieve the goals in their life today.
