What Is a Homework Policy?

Over many years, appropriate homework can add the equivalent of at least one additional year of full-time education or inadequate homework is equivalent to losing one whole year’s education. How to Create a Homework Policy

For example, provisions to prevent too much homework in a single subject or in several subjects on a single night should be included. So, here are some important guides and tips that we recommend you to follow:

1. Conduct interviews and research to collect some data 

The book “Practical Action Research for Change” suggests that the school board members and the school superintendent should arrange to collect three sets of data about homework: questionnaire data from parents, interview data from superintendents of school districts, and document data on what research says about homework and student learning.

Conducting an interview with the respondents are helpful in knowing their opinions, comments, and suggestions regarding the homework policy that you are working on. The school principal should also do some careful research on the Internet about  homework and student learning

2. Analyze and present the data to the school board association 

After gathering all the necessary data, analyze the responses of the teachers, school facilitators, parents, and students. How many families want more or much more homework? How many of them want less of it? Who wants to have a policy to give homework? Are there any teachers, and parents want to have no homework policy? 

Use your research and study materials to include in the reasons and evidence why homework reinforcement is essential in boosting the skills and performance of the students.  

Then, hold meetings with the school board and the parents to present your data analysis and state your advocacy for student homework. The chairperson should lead the audience with the use of a question-and-answer discussion. After that, the board members must get some ideas and suggestions from parents about the quantity of homework that is reasonable for their children.  

3. Test and practice the new homework policy

Organize a team of teachers and a designated group of students with varying age, grade, and class. Set a first team and second team to have assessment in trying contrasting policies for two or three weeks. In this way, they are able to see the possible effects of getting more or having less homeworks to each student’s intellectual, emotional, physical and mental health.

For example, a teacher wants a policy that instructors should assign more homework to students regularly to enhance their brain function but another teacher proposes a policy that teachers should set a standard limit of homeworks for the students so that they can enjoy some free time with their families during several nights and the weekends. 

4. Check the effects to the students

After finishing the practice workshops, it is now time for you to check the effects of the new practices and have evaluation on their reactions. Ask the class advisers and teachers of the students who participated in the new practices on how each of them performed at school. Did the students who worked on many homeworks improved their grades? Or how did the students assigned less homeworks excel in their studies? 

If you observe some noticeable changes in the students’ learning abilities, make a conclusion report and send it to the school board and officials. Knowing how the children behaved in the new practices will help you determine what kind of homework policy the students will benefit from and motivate them to further improve their learning capacities more than before. 

Additionally, incorporate the hopes and concerns of their parents and tutors in establishing the new homework policy. This will enhance their coordination along with the teachers in their goals in assisting the intellectual growth of their children.
