Reference letters are most commonly made to affirm a person’s character. This is what you call a character reference. Here are Sample Character Reference Letters.
When You Need One
A character reference letter should demonstrate how qualified you are for your desired position or scholarship. So consider requesting one from a colleague, friend, professor, or adviser that could back you up. Address your reference request to someone who knows you and your capabilities well, and could best illustrate your qualifications.
When You Need to Make One
Alternatively, a work or schoolmate could have asked you to write one for them. Agree to do so when you believe that they truly are deserving. Cite personal experiences with that individual to show that they are qualified and that you believe in their abilities.
Because “recommending” has a positive connotation, remember to always work from a genuine place. Your letter of recommendation written for a colleague or friend also reflects you, so to reiterate, write one when you believe that it is well-deserved.
