Teachers are often faced with the challenge of how to tackle each individual student’s learning ability. Difference Between Assessment and Evaluation

For those of us who are not connected with either the guidance counselor or Human Resources office, it’s very easy not to distinguish between assessment and evaluation. After all, both are similar in a lot of aspects. There are, however, differences between the two, and in this section, we’ll explore how assessment and evaluation are quite different from each other.

Assessment is the process of estimation of an individual’s performance and used primarily for gathering data on an individual’s performance and used to find ways to improve performance. It is diagnostic in nature and not meant to judge a person’s performance, hence it is process-oriented. An assessment is also based on a balanced observation of an individual’s positive and negative points, and its criteria are cooperatively set by both parties.

An evaluation, meanwhile, is judgmental in nature compared to the diagnostic aspect of an assessment. Whereas an assessment is a process meant to comply with certain regulations and instructions, an evaluation is product-oriented meant to adhere to a quality standard set by an organization to maintain its integrity. Many blue chip companies regularly conduct evaluations among their top-level executives down to their ordinary employees to keep the level of standard in place. This is because evaluations are a major contributing factor to the company’s credibility and performance. Lastly, an evaluation is prescriptive of an individual, where a set couple of criteria is implemented by the evaluator to determine if the goals and objectives are being met and achieved.

An assessment has two general categories, namely formal and informal. Formal assessments are standardized measurements that reinforce conclusions made by a test. These are statistically proven assessments whose data have been gathered from students based on numerous tests from different educational institutions. The formal type of assessment is mathematically computed to be as accurate as possible, where standard scores and percentiles are factors for this kind of assessment.

An informal assessment, meanwhile, does not use data to support its conclusions, but rather base its appraisal more on performance factors. While no scientific method is used to determine the conclusion, performance is as much an important factor in determining performance because it’s more visible and easily assessed than having to go through a scientific process that may be definitive but tedious.

Starting Self-Assessment for Work

In order to have an objective self-assessment for work, the following tips must be considered:

  • Honesty – While you may be tempted to highlight your accomplishments, you should also be frank enough to include areas where you need to improve. Chances are the company already knows your performance, so any discrepancies on your self-assessment are bound to be noticed.
  • Emphasis – When highlighting your accomplishments, be sure to point out only specific tasks that highlight your most valuable work that are in line with management goals.
  • Professionalism – Writing self-assessments means you should focus only on the most relevant aspects of the assessment procedure. This is not the time to criticize your work environment or the manager, or even your immediate supervisor. There is another avenue for that.
