In the early morning hours of June 14, 1947, something crashed in a remote ranch owned by a farmer named Mac Brazel in the tiny town of Roswell, New Mexico. The object that crashed spewed a lot of debris all over the place and Mr. Brazel could not identify any of the parts when he went out to check. Several miles away, Jim Ragsdale was purportedly entertaining his girlfriend at the back of his pickup truck when an unknown object roared overhead and crashed with a loud explosion a mile or so away from his position.
What would later be known as the Roswell Incident created a media frenzy and swept the nation into an era of UFO frenzy that refused to die even until today. What really happened at Roswell is still subject to a debate, and the verdict is still out whether it was just a crashed weather balloon or a real alien spacecraft. However, due to statement analysis procedures, investigators could tell who was telling the truth and who was lying.
Our website’s Analysis Samples give a couple of examples not just for investigative statement analysis but also for financial statements and thesis statements. These are all free to download and can be used as guides for whatever purpose they may serve.

In investigative reporting, statement analysis procedures are also known as Statement Validity Analysis (SVA) and Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN). These are used to analyze words used by people or witnesses to determine whether they are telling the truth or lying. When used by experts, they can determine if the person is concealing something, not giving enough information, or if the person’s statement is true or false.
Such technique was used on purported witness Jim Ragsdale about what he saw on Roswell during that fateful night in 1947. On a Statement Validity Analysis (SVA) conducted by psychiatrist James Houran and psychologist Stephen Porter, they evaluated the credibility of Mr. Ragsdale using additional fact pattern analysis to conclude that Mr. Jim Ragsdale was lying with his statement and concluded he was not a credible witness. Through intensive statement analysis conducted by the two professionals, they identified several major factual inconsistencies and potential implausible information. They concluded Mr. Ragsdale’s story was a complete and deliberate fabrication and that he was nowhere near Roswell when the incident happened.

Statement analysis can also be used in strategic management, although it’s quite different and unrelated to investigative statement analysis. These are often used in the business world when they need certain competitors to win over to their side or to invite them to work together. These are intended to let stakeholders increase their influence over a certain niche in the market or when certain competitors are often offered a huge amount to buy over their business. These are common occurrences than most people know and oftentimes, these are used to create a cartel and agree on a pricing scheme of certain commodities like oil.
